Stadium Fire At IF Gnistan. Veikkausliiga June-July Review. EIF Ekenäs & KuPS Kuopio Fans. Kansallinenliiga Update. Men’s & Women’s Suomen Cup.

In this episode, Mark W and Keke are joined by once again by Rasmus Junila, who is becoming a regular recurring guest. They start this episode with a sad topic, the fire last weekend that destroyed the main stand at IF Gnistan’s Mustapekka Areena. They get the inside story from Frans Enala, Head of Communications & Marketing at IF Gnistan.

The team discuss the past month of action in the Veikkausliiga, as SJK and HJK join KuPS at the top of the table. Ally phones in his view of recent action at HJK and KuPS fan, Jouni, shares his thoughts on KuPS’ season so far. They are also joined by another FFS fan, Farid, an EIF Ekenäs fan who also has a soft spot for Gnistan.

There is an update on the current standings in the women’s Kansallinen Liiga. They also look back at recent results in the Men’s and Women’s Suomen Cup, with the women’s quarter-finals and men’s semi-finals to look forward to. Rasmus’ local knowledge of the Tampere scene is tested by news of an alleged betting scandal at Ilves-Kissat in Tampere.

VAR Coming to Finland 🫣

Helsingin Sanomat article https://www.hs.fi/urheilu/art-2000010557677.html According to Janne Kosunen at HS:

What can VAR intervene in?

VAR should correct clear fouls that have been overlooked by the referee. There are four points.

  1. All goals are always checked from the video; whether they were made according to the rules.
  2. VAR can intervene in situations where a player’s foul is worth a direct sending off.
  3. Has any situation been a penalty kick or not?
  4. Has the card given by the referee gone to the right player in the team?

Where does VAR work?

  • There are two options: either a VAR center or a van driven next to the stadium, where the assistant video referee and his assistants work. The necessary technology has been built into the car.
  • The stadium must have sufficient telecommunications connections so that the video connections work and the VAR car can communicate with the field.
  • In Finland, at least initially, a VAR car is used. The working premises have air conditioning.

When is VAR coming to the league?

  • In the Veikkausliiga, the system will be introduced at the end of the season directly in the Euro final tournament and the league qualifiers.
  • In the men’s Finnish Cup, VAR is used in the semi-final match played on August 21 and later in the final match. There is also VAR in the final of the women’s Finnish Cup.
  • This year, excluding the test phase, there will be 11 matches supported by a video referee in Finland. The number will be increased next year.
