Finally, we look forward to next week’s UEFA club competitons, which see HJK, KuPS, Inter and SJK in actionnns overseas, many successes and just a few disappointments.
The FFS team was at full-strength again for this episode, which is handy as Mark W, Rich, Keke & Mark H had a very full agenda to get through – and that was before Keke invented the new ‘extra time’ segment 🤦🏻♂️
Once again, we have a broad update from across various aspects of football, Finland-style: we start with a Veikkausliiga update and further discussion of SJK Seinäjoki’s woes. We look a few weeks ahead to the four upcoming Nations League games and herald the Finn who’s participating in the Champions League Final.
There’s also a Suomen Cup update, pausing to laugh at Ilves losing to their reserves and to celebrate the smaller sides still in the fifth round. And we finish up by looking at the achievements of the Finns overseas, many successes and just a few disappointments.
The FFS team was selected from a full squad for this episode as Mark W, Rich, Keke & Mark H reconvene to bring you an update across the world of football in Finland. We start by looking at the current state of play in Veikkausliiga 2022, where all the teams have played four games.
We also discuss Helsinki IFK’s tough start to the season, their new manager (already!) Mixu Paatelainen and the upcoming ‘Stadin Derby’ between HIFK and HJK. We look back at the recent World Cup qualifiers for the women’s national team, the Helmarit, and results & upcoming fixtures in the Suomen Cup.
This is the episode that Mark H has been promising/threatening for a couple of weeks. The team discuss the recent spate of sackings, announcements of upcoming resignations (pre-signations?) and rumoured manager transfers for 2022. Attention then turns to SJK Seinäjoki, who are firmly embroiled in this silly-season and whose fans are about to take action and boycott the upcoming game with FC Inter Turku.
Mark W speaks to Chris Cleaver, the British football agent at Scandinavian FI OÜ Player Agency. Chris is the former captain & first team coach of SJK Seinäjoki in Finland. He talks about his playing career in Finland, bookended with spells in Seinäjoki, before explaining about the transition to becoming an agent and how this has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mark W talks to SJK Seinäjoki’s new 1st Team Coach, Joaquin Gomez about his bold move from Spain to the UK and dramatic rise, as a coach and assistant manager, through the Football League (EFL). We talk about how meeting Sami Hyypiä and Antti Niemi, later led to opportunities to become coach for Finland U21s and, latterly, SJK. Finally, he explains how they are keeping the SJK players fit, physically and mentally, during this period of uncertainty.
Mark W speaks to Richie Dorman, the British technical director of SJK Seinäjoki in Finland. Richie talks about his career in Finland from player to technical director, seemingly overnight, and how SJK is taking care of it’s players, employees and Academy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In episode 23, we discuss the 2019 Veikkausliiga season at the halfway stage. We look back at the disgraceful scenes at the end of the Suomen Cup Final. We also hear Keke trying to remember his trip to Liechtenstein to watch the Finnish national team.
Add-in some short news stories and the new, regular features and it’s another high-standard Finnish Football Show.
