Euro 2020 is looming large on the horizon but it’s still not clear exactly WHO can travel to the games and precisely HOW they might get there. We are joined in this episode by friend-of-the-show, Jussi Hartikainen, Executive Director of the Finland national team supporters club, who gives us the fresh news.
We also look back at the final of the Suomen Cup, won by KuPS on penalties, the World Cup qualifying draw for the Finland Women’s national team, the Helmarit, and as the Veikkausliiga 2021 season kicks off, we discuss the first few rounds of games and see if any early patterns have emerged.
The season’s about to start, the FFS team is excited to get back into the stands and cheer our teams on. So what better way to ramp-up the excitement, than by looking at all of the shiny, new players at each Veikkausliiga club? Alas, it’s never as simple as that in the COVID era, as it seems there will be no fans in the ground at least until mid-May, so we’ll have to watch on TV.
We also talk about the recent announcements about Euro 2020. Is travelling allowed? Are any of the FFS team still going? And who else makes the Huuhkajat squad, now that 26 players can be selected for each country.
There’s only one place to start this episode, so we look back at the disgraceful racist behaviour towards Glen Kamara last week (let’s not give the offender or his club any more publicity here!) This show was hosted by Keke with Mark H and Rich, who also discuss the Finland National team squad that was just announced and preview the three upcoming games; Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ukraine and Switzerland.
They also talk about the recent result (singular) in the Suomen Cup and consider how the Veikkausliiga season will be affected by an upswing in COVID cases in Finland. They even find time for a quick ‘Ja sillä sipuli..‘ and to throw a little MORE shade at Mark W for moonlighting with other podcasts about Finnish football 😉
(“I AM listening” – Mark)
The Suomen Cup has progressed through the groups stages, so we look back at the recent action and forward to the upcoming knockout games. We also discuss the recently released 2021 fixture list for the Finland Mens National Team, the Huuhkajat. We blow a little smoke up Keke’s a** for the interviews he’s arranged recently in our FFS In Conversation… series. And we throw a little shade at Mark W for moonlighting with other podcasts about Finnish football 😱
But there’s only one place we can start and that is by discussing the Finland Womens National Team, the Helmarit, who stormed through their qualification group for Euro 2021 (which will be hosted in the UK in 2022, of course.)
2021, the new 2020. On Tuesday March 2nd, the Palloliitto announced the final preparation game ahead of the European Championships, leaving us with what we think will be the complete set of fixtures for the 2021 international season… Continue reading Save The Date: Huuhkajat Fixtures 2021
We’re in the middle of the closed-season in Finland, which is why we’ve been quiet lately, but with the Suomen Cup due to restart on 1st February, we look forward to the group stage and explain the structure of the competition. We also discuss the closed-season transfers in the Veikkausliiga and for Finns overseas.
But first, we look at the recent noise created by UEFA and the recent announcements about ticket refunds for EURO 2020…
With a new year on the horizon, the Finnish Football Show broke out it’s socially distanced champagne (Karhu A) to take a look at the highs and lows of 2020 and get out their appropriately masked crystal balls to peer into 2021. Continue reading FFS 2020: Our Year In Review
In this episode, I hope we’ll get back to something like normal. Wait, wait, don’t all switch off or skip to the next show in your podcast player. Surely YOU are gagging for football as much as we are?! We recorded this in the first week of June 2020 and there are a couple of key dates coming up in the near future; the Veikkausliiga is due to kick off from the 1st July and the Suomen Cup has matches scheduled from 16th June.
We look at those Suomen Cup fixtures and then start to prepare for the Veikkausliiga kick off, by looking at the transfers that have taken place during the extended closed season. All EIGHT months of it! 😫 This show was pulled together all of a sudden (with two weeks planning!) but we won’t have all the usual features this time. We’ll bring back ‘Ja sillä sipuli’ and ‘Following’ next time, we promise.
Yes, we know, it’s been ages since the last show, but this time it really ISN’T our fault. There’s been this virus thing, you see. This episode is something a little different. Firtsly, it’s only Mark W & Keke, but this time we are joined by a very special guest, Mikko Laitinen, Marketing Manager at Suomen Palloliitto – the Finnish Football Association.
Mikko talks to us about financial challenges within Finnish football and, conversely, the commercial opportunities offered by the impressive performances of the Huuhkajat. Mikko also explained the background to the “Kauden tärkein ottelu” (the Season’s Most Important Game) campaign, which enables fans to support Finnish football during this difficult time. Encouragingly, the start of the 2020 Veikkausliiga season was also announced on 6.5.2020, the day of the recording, so of course we talked about that too.
